What's your business, and who are your customers?
Veil Beauty Co. is a mobile hair and makeup service company that concentrates on bridal, special events, everyday glam, and education sessions. We consist of a team of beauty professionals that offer high-quality makeup artistry services and hair design led by Kerris and Emily. We have over 15 years of experience in the beauty industry. Our passion is to educate, inspire, and promote confidence in people. We know our job is done when our clients leave our chair not only looking amazing but feeling confident and beautiful from within. Our wide range of clientele includes bridal, grads, teens, influencers, models, and everyday women who need some new tips and tricks to update their look or have a special event to attend. Our goal with every single person that we have the privilege of working on is to ensure they look their best and feel even better.
Tell us about yourself
Kerris has always had a passion for the beauty industry ever since working part-time in cosmetics while attending the bachelor of arts program. The more Kerris grew in the beauty industry, the more she had to be a part of the ever-so-evolving world of makeup and skincare. Kerris knew she had to make an impact on people, and this was her chance to not only make people look beautiful but feel confident and beautiful too! Kerris has worked with multiple companies like the Estee Lauder group, Sephora, and Shoppers Beauty Boutiques. She has done makeup for multiple fashion shows and attended various education training for makeup in North America. Kerris has always had a passion for education and developed various makeup artistry programs and makeup seminars for other businesses and Veil Beauty Co.
Emily always knew that hair was her calling. Growing up with a sister that was also in the hair industry, she always intended to follow in her big sister's footsteps. After taking a year after high school to work two jobs, Emily entered hair school full of excitement and readiness to learn. When Emily completed her hair school program, she felt that she needed more education and heard of an amazing program in Edmonton through Aveda. Emily moved from Saskatoon to Edmonton to attend an additional year of education, and during that year realized how much she loved making people feel and look their best. After two years of working behind the chair, Emily trained to become an educator and wanted to teach all of her knowledge to new stylists entering the hair industry. With all of the knowledge of working behind the chair and education, Emily moved on to manage a very successful salon. With all of the experience Emily has from education to management, she was so excited to start a new venture with Veil Beauty Co. and have the opportunity to do hair design for the most important and exciting days of her client's lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment has been watching our business grow! We created Veil Beauty Co as a lip line for brides. Perfect lip shades for every bride with fun bridal names like 'I Do, and Best Day Ever!" to name a few. We worked hard to grow Veil Beauty Co to what it is today- one of Edmonton's top Beauty service providers. Our 'Aha" moment was when customers continuously asked us to do their makeup and hair for events! We knew right then Veil was evolving into something bigger than what we anticipated. With the support, love, and loyalty of our clients, we continue to grow as a team and business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being our own boss has its peaks and pits! While we love having flexibility with scheduling, we also find it difficult to turn off our business boss switch! Between emails, social media, and business calls, our phones are always on! We are constantly thinking of what to do to improve our business and make our clients happier, and sometimes it can be difficult to turn that off!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you have a business idea, don't ever be afraid to run with it and see where it goes! We wouldn't be where we are today if we didn't take a leap of faith!
- Never be afraid to ask for help! We can't be experts at everything. Ask friends or family or people you know in the field where you need help. Talking with people in the same industry as you can be a great source of information and a great way to network too.
- Creating a business from the ground up takes hard work, tears, dedication, and a lot of love. At times if you get flustered, anxious, or overwhelmed, do something that makes you happy! Never be afraid to take a step back and spend some time doing something that gives you joy- those moments may leave you feeling inspired!
