Interested in starting your entrepreneurial journey but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Skylar Gerard, co-founder of RaiseHER Community, from Saskatchewan, Canada. Her co-founder is Talitha McCloskey.

Tell us all about your business...

RaiseHER Community is a for-impact, intergenerational social movement of women supporting women to become leaders in their communities. We are dedicated to helping women from all backgrounds, career levels, ages, industries, and walks of life uncover, exercise, and develop their leadership skills.

What's your background and motivation to grow as an entrepreneur?

Both of us were privileged to have had built-in role models of leadership in our mothers growing up, and through this shared experience, we realized the heightened confidence that we had as young women. We quickly realized few female leadership role models and mentorship opportunities for women in our personal and professional lives. We searched for ways to make leadership and finding a leadership role model more accessible to all women.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our most significant accomplishment has been changing perceptions of what a leader truly is by showcasing the many faces of leadership in our community that span career titles, backgrounds, industries, and ages. Through this, we have helped women in our community see that we can all be leaders at any time in our lives. Leadership is not a title or status to achieve. It is the authentic action of raising and empowering others to become leaders around you.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

Remember that you will never make everyone happy, and that is ok. Stay true to your values and target audience and focus on what actions best align with your mission and vision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

  1. Figure out what your business stands for (values) and use those as your guiding compass for all decisions.
  2. Collaborate, learn from and support your competitors rather than compete with them.
  3. Consistently gather feedback and treat your employees and customers with compassion.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business, like having a child, takes a village. Find your town and don't be afraid to ask for help.
