Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lynn Herkes, Founder of WOWSuccessTeam, located in Sheridan, WY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a business engineer that provides customized, engineered solutions to assist solopreneurs and small businesses with their time, tech, and team so they can grow their businesses without the stress and frustration.

Tell us about yourself

I began my business after retiring early from aerospace project engineering, transitioning into marketing for a large hotel chain, obtaining two master's degrees, and working for a luxury property management company where I was helping their vendors, who were small, family-owned companies, with their operational challenges. I absolutely love it when we are able to implement solutions that make business owners (and teams) lives easier, and they are super happy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've tripled my revenue and team in the last six months, and now I can help a lot more businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling your time and finances and making the right choices in a huge sea of input for everything from tech to coaching to hiring.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start: Make a realistic business plan - even if it's just for yourself. No different than scuba diving - plan your dive, dive your plan - plan your business, work your plan. It doesn't mean you can't change it. But if you plan, you're more likely to be successful.
  2. Run: Research before you choose anything! Including a coach. I recommend a coach, tech, and team members. But shiny object syndrome is real and really expensive. So do your homework. Find the right fit. Don't waste your hard-earned time and money because someone you know recommends something or someone. Just because something or someone worked for a friend doesn't mean it will work for you.
  3. Grow: Test, test, test. If you're thinking about growing, you're probably ready to grow. But test it. Figure out what would be the most helpful thing to do (for example, delegating stuff that you're not the most talented at or that you hate doing) and research potential people who could do it for you and test it. Don't go full-blown into something until you're sure it will work.
