Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership and personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Yvette Gavin, Founder of Yvette Gavin Consulting, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Yvette Gavin Consulting is a personal development firm focused on teaching others how to grow professionally, how to grow a business, and how to grow spiritually. My customers are women aged 30 to 50 who are or desire to work in professional environments.

Tell us about yourself

I witnessed too many missed treatments of people (especially women) in the workplace. Over time, I developed a heart to help others grow their careers while growing spiritually. I had great success in corporate America, and I realized it wasn't just for me but more of a spiritual calling to share with others what I had learned for them to achieve success.

What motivates me today? Simply knowing that I am doing the very things I was born to do. I am here to help others grow and achieve their purpose. Each day I focus on how to do just that, and knowing that there are not many more women I haven't reached with the good news that success is possible for them, too, keeps me moving forward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

During my second year in business, I secured a two-year contract with a Federal agency to deliver presentation skills and personal branding courses. This contract opened doors for executive coaching and organizational leadership consulting work where I'm helping others to grow personally, professionally, and even spiritually throughout the United States and abroad.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is building a team. I had to learn that I needed support with some of the routine tasks to grow my business. For me, it was about trusting someone to do the work at the level of quality I wanted. It took me about two years before I got there, and I'm so thankful I got there because I could not provide the service I'm doing today without the support from my back office.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the time in the very beginning to set up your company correctly
i.e., do the back office & administration work to ensure a strong foundation.
  2. Build relationships within your industry because it is not always the BEST in the business that gets the business. It's a combination of being good at what you do and being great at building relationships.
  3. Don't quit. Keep your purpose in front of you at all times because there will be growing pains but trust me if you stick with it and learn from the growing pains, the rewards that come with great success will be yours.
