Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Davina Hehn, Founder of A Steady Space, LLC., located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Communication & Anger Management Specialist. I work with partners, co-parents, individuals, and families looking to resolve conflict and find ways to express themselves without causing collateral damage (others' feelings!). Oftentimes we expect ourselves and others to be able to verbalize our needs, but if we aren't taught how to do so effectively, it can breed anger and resentment and cause those relationships to end. My focus is on prevention and repair, getting us to a point where we can speak assertively and set necessary boundaries in order to foster deeper connections with ourselves and those around us.

Tell us about yourself

I started my education with the intention of practicing traditional therapy. I achieved a Master of Arts degree in Forensic & Counseling Psychology and found it wasn't what I was passionate about. I knew I wanted to be an agent of change and impact my clients positively. I began taking an inventory of my own life and soon discovered many of us have not been guided effectively in how to express ourselves and manage conflict. My partner and I also started our family and quickly recognized the challenges and communication breakdown no one prepared us for!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting this practice at all! I hadn't seen myself getting here but taking one step at a time and doing the next thing needed slowly and surely got me where I am. I am deeply proud of myself for taking the risk and believing that I not only could do it, but I would (and I did!).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Actually running the business! I've had to take on countless roles within my own business, all of which require new and different skills. Being in sessions and running my programs is the easy part - the rest of it is the true challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your best not to allow fear or imposter syndrome to keep you from trying to use them as fuel.
  2. Stay humble. Always be in a mindset of growth and opportunity. Trust your intuition but allow yourself to question it from time to time to ensure it's guiding you in the right direction.
  3. Don't underestimate your existing network! You may "expect" referrals from some and be wildly surprised when they come from the most unexpected sources.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Learning these skills is like learning how to read. You can't just know how; it must be learned. Start with the basics and reinforce them. That way, you'll know everything built on top of it has a secure foundation.
