Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annie Legault, founder of Amulette, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Amulette is the french word meaning protection against darkness. High in concept and low in technology, Amulette has been my fiber-power art project since 2013. I am specialized in handcrafted objects, functional art pieces, and custom projects since 2013. My clients are mostly interior designers, architects, art lovers, commissioners, gallery owners. Supporter of the "slow design" process, the direction of Amulettes is to evoke a feeling of cocooning through the philosophy of the perfectly imperfect adapted from the wabi-sabi movement.

Tell us about yourself

Amulet arrived in my life as a surprise; I had no commercial intentions at the start. I exhibited my final academic (Concordia University) work in a window in Old Montreal, and the media contacted me. My daring installation of giant jute chandeliers and neon pink tassels caught their attention! Our televised conversation focused on the passing of contemporary textile heritage through the generations. The snowball effect then began in 2013, and now I have made it my full-time job with two part-time employees!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have just delivered my first institutional contract! That the city of Montreal and the Atelier Zébulon Perron collaborators trusted me remains a highlight to this day in my career as a textile artist. Another unforgettable moment was the commission of a public art installation for Yvanohé Campbridge installed in 2021. Life is unpredictable; I like that!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Entrepreneurship requires a great capacity for adaptation in good and bad times. Sometimes I feel more vulnerable; sometimes, I feel completely confident: the years of entrepreneurship have taught me to take and leave. This allowed me to know more about myself, know my strengths and weaknesses, and thus surround myself well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1-Follow your heart
2-Follow your heart
3-Follow your heart
Seriously, because being an entrepreneur is an integral part of your life, you have to be passionate never to have the feeling of working.
