Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carmen Lorenzana, Menstrual Educator and Coach, located in Helsinki, Finland.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a Menstrual cycle educator and coach, I create digital and in-person learning programs for women and people with periods who want to deeply understand their menstrual cycle, connect with their bodies and make conscious decisions about their reproductive health.

Tell us about yourself

In my 20's, and without further explanation, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Years later, my search for a better way to treat it led me to learn many things about my body, hormones, and cycle that nobody ever explained. I felt a genuine curiosity to know more but also deep anger for the things I grew up ignoring that led me to neglect my body terribly. I knew I wasn't the only one, and I immediately felt called to do something to change this. That's when I decided to become a menstrual educator and coach formally.

I sincerely believe that understanding how our body and hormones work is a right for every woman and every person with periods. So I'm on a mission to spread inclusive, comprehensive, and empowering education that honors the diversity of experiences when it comes not only to periods but to the cycle as a whole.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is seeing my clients become more aware of their natural cycles and find more loving and caring ways to engage with them. Periods and cycles are still a big taboo, there's a significant lack of information and tons of misconceptions out there about what being in a bleeding body means, but it's a great honor to be able to inspire and motivate people around me to see their cycles as a sign of health rather than a burden.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Probably my biggest challenge is constantly dealing with my imposter syndrome, you know, that inner voice that tells me that I'm not doing it right or that I'm not good enough. But I'm learning to recognize what's holding me back, look at ways to work past this and be compassionate with myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with a community of like-minded folks. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey and having peers cheering you up, holding you in difficult moments, and inspiring you can make a huge difference.
  2. Always remember your WHY. It's so easy to lose sight of it with the everyday hustle, especially as a solopreneur. But remembering why you're doing what you're doing will give you a sense of purpose and direction.
  3. Starting a business is a trial-and-error process. Not everything will work out at the beginning, you will make tons of mistakes, but the only way to learn is by doing! The earlier you accept this, the easier it will be.
