Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in graphic design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kori Harper, Founder of Cassia Creations, located in Milton, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cassia Creations is a professional web and graphic design business which I founded. A hard-working, coffee-loving wife and mother to two littles.

Cassia Creations is meant to serve businesses large and small. I am honored to work with small start-ups when defining their brand and business strategy, as well as assisting well-known and established corporations in their variety of marketing campaigns.

My hope is to plant inspiration in all of my clients, growing the possibility of Cassia Creations becoming an accessible media team for other moms and dads alike, seeking to fuel their creativity and feed their families with the flexibility of freelance work.

Tell us about yourself

After welcoming our first daughter into our lives, I realized I couldn’t go back to my onsite, full-time job if I wanted to put her first. My goal was to stay home, with my daughter, for at least one year, before returning to work to love this new life that I was blessed with. As expected, the budget was tight! So I started working part-time for my mother-in-law’s medical cleaning business at night while my husband whisked the little one off to bedtime. I wasn’t opposed to sanitizing exam rooms and scrubbing toilets. However, I soon realized that while I could work any job to make ends meet, what I really wanted was to utilize my creativity to provide for my family in a flexible and exciting way. This was when I founded Cassia Creations- with my daughter as my muse and a dream to become a mompreneur in my very own small business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building a clientele of long-standing professional relationships. I’m incredibly grateful to grow with my clients in expanding their brands, boosting their social media presence, and much more!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Just like a garden, running your own business is only as successful as what you pour into it. If you want to grow on social media, you have to take the time to post every day. If you want to earn new clients, you have to find them! You can’t simply punch a time clock and earn a paycheck like a normal 9-5. This is also what I love most about owning my business, though- the constant question of- “Do you really want this” If so, let’s work for it!”.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in your brand and growth strategy! If you can’t do this yourself, spend the money on a designer and marketing team that will help you meet your business goals. Don’t make the mistake of saying, “I’ll do this myself” if you won’t make the time for it. Brand recognition and marketing are crucial to your business’ success.
  2. Network. Don’t be afraid to share your business with family, friends, or your local barista. You never know who you will connect with in your everyday routine. It’s a small world!
  3. Love what you do. It’s simple; if you’re not passionate about it, you won’t want to make it a priority.
