Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marika Humphreys, Founder of Coach Marika LLC., located in Tacoma, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach people who are caring for a partner with a serious illness like cancer. Becoming a caregiver for your partner can be challenging. It's a role few people are prepared for and can feel like an emotional roller coaster. My clients often come to me when their partner's health has taken a turn, and they are struggling to cope with the fear, anxiety, and uncertainty they are experiencing. These fears and worries keep them from being about to show up for their family in the way they want. I teach them how to manage their mind and emotions so that they aren't exhausted and can actually be present and supportive of themselves and the ones who need them most.

Tell us about yourself

My late husband battled cancer for 5 years. When he was first diagnosed, I was 40, working full-time, and raising our five-year-old. It was completely out of the blue and really rocked us. Several years into his cancer battle, we found a coaching program that taught us tools that helped us to cope. It was life-changing, and despite his cancer, we learned to focus on the things we had control over.

My husband passed away from cancer, and I knew I wanted to help other people with what I had learned. I got certified as a coach from The Life Coach School and started my coaching business 18 months later. I love seeing my clients discover the strength and wisdom they have inside. It's an honor to help them through one of the most challenging times of their life. The resilience I see in them is inspiring.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest challenge for me was having the courage to get started! It's so easy to put off our dreams when we are comfortable. However, losing my husband taught me that life can be short, and I didn't want to let my fears stop me from doing what I loved. It took a lot of courage to leave my very secure career and start my business, but it was the best thing I've done!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a coach is incredible, and I love helping people discover their inner strength. However, I'm also a business owner, and that means I also have to do all the other things required to run a sustainable business. In the beginning, it was a little overwhelming to have to learn about marketing and sales. But I'm developing these skills and learning to love that part of my business as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Start small, get support, and remind yourself that success is inevitable if you don't give up!
