What's your business, and who are your customers?

Curl Ministry LLC is a small business dedicated to ending the hair care struggles of naturals of all ages. Curl Ministry offers four products perfect for tight curls/coils Prosperity Thickening and Growth Oil, Prosperity Body Glaze, Embrace Moisturizing Shampoo, and Embrace Deep Conditioner. Curl Ministry's products are free of alcohol, detergents, and additives. Our products get their effectiveness from familiar organic ingredients known to add vitamins, nutrients, and exceptional hydration to your hair. These ingredients also assist with detangling and conditioning dry, brittle hair for a shorter, easier wash day.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Guyana-made, Brooklyn, NY-raised mom, wife, entrepreneur, lover of a good paranormal romance series, and carry-out chicken wings. When I started making natural hair products, Curl Ministry was not on my horizon. I was just a woman on the search for products that would aid me on my journey to experience the natural hair of my dreams. The idea to begin creating organic products from scratch was birth from a need that was not being fulfilled by the current market of organic products available to Black women. I tried almost every product in the multicultural aisle at Target, only to discover I couldn't find one product line that worked well on both my daughter and me. So, I started researching and experimenting with oils, fruits, roots, and powders in hopes of creating a combination of products that would allow our curls to flourish. It took many attempts to get the ingredients right. When I did, I shared the resulting products with a friend, who strongly suggested I start a business selling my products. I am a creator. My husband calls me a mad scientist because I love cooking up new products and discovering how they affect my curls. It gives me life when I receive word from a customer indicating that they love Curl Ministry and that the products changed their curls for the better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being a hair product entrepreneur. I took raw organic ingredients and turned them into products that transform struggling curls and coils into healthy, moisturized, and manageable hair. I started curl ministry as a way to help people who are struggling with their natural hair. As someone who has been there myself, I know how difficult it can be to find products that work for your unique curl pattern and texture. That's why I'm so proud of the results I've seen since starting Curl Ministry. It still shocks me sometimes to see the hair transformations. I want my customers to love their hair and feel beautiful and confident with their own curls. I want them to have the confidence that comes with knowing that their curls are being cared for by the best product on the market. My customers love how their hair feels after using these products, and you will too!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is never enough time in the day, and the hardest part of being a business owner is choosing what won't get done today. I wear several hats throughout the day, including mom, and I have to be very intentional with my time. There are days when all my good intentions go out the window, and I have to choose between spending time with my family or working on my business. It's tough because your success is tied to you showing up and showing up consistently.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Niche down! It may be tempting to want to get your offer in front of everyone, to create content for everyone, and to sell, sell, sell. You are wasting a lot of time and energy trying to convince those who are not your people to purchase your offer. Instead, focus on finding your tribe. Find the people who will be your ambassador and will be on the front lines for you because they believe in your offer.
  2. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; that is where growth happens.
  3. Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs at different stages in their journey. They will support you, push you, and hold you accountable.
