Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patricia Bradshaw, Owner of Dance Studio B, located in Wilson, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dance Studio B is Wilson's most Theatrical Dance Studio. We welcome non-competitive dancers of all ages.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up in my mother's dance studio in NJ, I never thought I would open my own chapter of the family business. When my daughter was old enough to start taking classes, it just seemed like the only choice. Now that my daughter is grown and running a business of her own, I can't imagine doing anything else. I feel blessed to earn a living sharing my life of dance and performing with others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I cherish my big beautiful family. Although we all live so far apart, I am extremely proud of the home away from home I have created for all of my dancers and their families. I am deeply touched by the large number of students who come back to visit and help out in whatever way they can to make our studio the best it can B.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dance is a luxury that not everyone can afford. Although we do all we can to make our classes available to all who want to be part of our family, life sometimes gets in the way, and we are forced to say goodbye to some before we are ready to let them go.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. B passionate about what you are doing. If you truly love it, it will not feel like work. If you love what you're doing, your enthusiasm will B contagious.
  2. Hire employees that care. The best dancers are not always the best instructors; the best instructors may not always take your studio and its students' best interests to heart.
  3. Always make sure your staff and volunteers know how much you appreciate them. You may not B in a position to pay them the highest wage, but if they feel like you value their efforts and all they bring to the table, they are far more likely to remain loyal to you, your business, and your clientele.
