Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert Staub, Founder of EQIQ Leadership, located in Stokesdale, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EQIQ Leadership focuses on building wholehearted, effective leadership and high-performance work cultures through training, coaching, and on-site consulting with executives, teams, and organizations. Our customers run the gamut of all major industries and include small organizations as well as Fortune 100 companies. We only work with those executives and their teams who have the courage to face challenges and to be the best version of themselves.

Tell us about yourself

I have been working with individuals, families, communities, and companies for nearly fifty years now. My career started as a Crisis Center Director and Licensed Marital and Family Therapist before becoming a Fellow in the School of Engineering at Virginia Tech. What drew me into helping others was the awareness that emotional intelligence determined not only how much someone could enjoy their life but also how effective they could be in their career. What motivates me is seeing people turn on to the power they have within when they engage the energy of the Heart to inform the analytical processes of their head. I deeply enjoy seeing people become far more effective and enjoying themselves both at work as well as at home as they increase their personal insight and understanding of others and make use of the simple, direct, hands-on skills and methodology that we have to offer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having worked now with more than one hundred companies and hearing the success stories and appreciation coming from executives even decades after, we helped train and coach them. Additionally, helping launch others into the business world as they create their own enterprises.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Recognizing when someone is not a good fit, even though they are a good person, and making the decision to let them go and find a better path.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on the Value Equation, what it is that you have to offer that meets the needs or aspirations of others, and then carefully articulate it so that it is easy to grasp.
  2. Identify your customer base and who you want to serve as clients with where your value proposition will best connect.
  3. Identify who helps you even as you are focused on helping others. Having allies and expert input can make the difference between success or failure. Have the courage to be vulnerable and ask for help.
