Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gevorg Grigoryan, Founder of Gevorg, CPA Coaching, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Gevorg, CPA Coaching provides CPA Canada Professional Education Program (PEP), Common Final Exam (CFE), and Practical Experience Requirement (PER) tutoring and coaching to help candidates successfully become designated Canadian Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs).

My clients are university students, internationally trained accountants, and CPA candidates that require supplemental support in passing their CPA exams.

Tell us about yourself

As a professor of accounting in Vancouver, I have the aptitude and passion for teaching complex topics using simple words. The CPA studies are grueling, with thousands of rules and formulas to remember. I wanted to challenge myself to take these complex theories and translate them into simple words. The CPA program is ever-changing, which requires me to continuously update my materials to stay up to date. I enjoy this challenge.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been featured in numerous articles and news sites as a CPA program expert.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I'm required to be available and online 24/7/365. This means I have no weekends and no vacations. On the other hand, I can control my schedule and take days off when needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start something you're passionate about. Growing a business takes a lot of hard work. If you're not passionate about it, you'll give up.
  2. Do market research. It's one thing to be passionate about something, but it's another to be passionate about a product that is in demand.
  3. Persevere. There will be lots of challenges and obstacles as a start-up, so ensure you carry out your vision until the end.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There is no better time to start a business than now. My advice to young professionals is to take action. The first step is the hardest, but when you get the ball rolling, it becomes easier.
