Interested in starting your entrepreneurial journey in business & personal development, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan RoAne, founder of The RoAne Group, based in San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA. Susan is a best-selling author.

Tell us all about your business...

I'm a (legit) best-selling author whose business is a professional speaking business. I've also coached future authors and those who want to build their networking skills. My ideal clients are corporations, associations, universities that wish to develop their communication, connection, and networking skills. And be successful at meeting potential clients and colleagues at conferences, events, gatherings. (Based on my long-time best-seller How To Work a Room)

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

Massive Teacher layoffs from San Francisco Unified School District inspired me to create a Career Change Workshop for Teachers....and my journey moved from there.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business impacts peoples' lives to be more confident, comfortable, and effective in groups they need to know. Both the shy and introverted have benefitted from my strategies and techniques. Much as I felt as a teacher, the goal is to help those in the "Classroom." I have. Also, I'm proud of the fact I didn't fall for "shiny bright objects" and purveyors of pabulum and ran an ethical business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

Paperwork is not my strong suit. As a double major in English/History, I didn't have an accounting background. Wish I did. But I was wise enough to join our SF Chamber, Women Entrepreneurs, and National Speakers Assn to LEARN.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

  1. Know and love your subject/and or product.
  2. Run your business like a business....not a "side hustle."
  3. Remember YOU are your best business PR Tool.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

MEET DEADLINES! I learned this as a student, as a teacher, and it served me well as an author and in my speaking business.
