Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with JD Schramm, Motivational Speaker of JD Schramm Communications, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide communication coaching, workshops, and keynotes to individuals and firms of all sizes aimed at helping them communicate with greater power.

Tell us about yourself

Since my early teens, I've been recognized as a good communicator. After earning a BFA in theatre and an MBA in entrepreneurship, I chose to focus my career on teaching and coaching communication for business leaders. I've taught at some remarkable schools, including Stanford, Columbia, NYU, and now USC. Where I thrive is in helping leaders at all levels of proficiency and experience write and speak with more strength and impact.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking a huge setback and turning it into a thriving speaking, writing, and coaching practice.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Self-promotion even filling out this form forces me to step through my own discomfort. I know I add value to those with whom I interact, but it's hard for me to "bang my own drum," as some solopreneurs seem to do with ease and grace. (And, okay, some without much grace!)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Nail your story. It's crucial to have a clear and concise way to share what you do.
  2. Tailor your story for each audience you address.
  3. It's not a one-size-fits-all. Seek out a coach, whether it's an outside coach, trusted advisor, or fellow colleague. Find somebody who is committed to helping you communicate with strength.
