What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a one-of-a-kind therapy and coaching clinic that offers therapy services for clients going through challenges from trauma, complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety to executive coaching. With a variety of therapeutic techniques, we create an individualized, bespoke treatment plan to help clients overcome stigma struggles and attain personal goals with compassionate, interactive, and trauma-informed care. Our clients are individuals, families, couples, military members, and first responders. We also offer professional services such as career coaching and work-life balance.

Tell us about yourself

This is my second career. I started as a ballet dancer by training and was in the dance world for 20 years. I had a career-ending injury, and I thought therapy would be interesting. From my own backstory, I fell in love with working through my own stuff and doing that with a therapist. All of a sudden, I was newly divorced with a one and a three-year-old, so I went back to graduate school for the third time and said, "okay, well, therapy sounds interesting, and I don't know if I'll be any good at it, but let's give it a go." I have been doing therapy ever since and have ended up loving this job as much as I loved being a dancer. I am motivated each day by my team and the work we do for the communities we serve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being of service to the population of military members, first responders, and their families. Even though we are a small business, we provide one of the largest services to veterans, first responders, and their families in the bay area. I also consider the fact that we provide clinical training to new therapists an accomplishment as well. As the clinical supervisor, I think it's incredibly important to pay it forward by training associates in trauma-informed services.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The wearing of all the different hats. I'm a therapist, clinical supervisor, CEO, mom, and mentor. It takes an incredible amount of balance, time management, and energy. Despite this, I love the work and the fact that my team helps me to be the best CEO that I can be.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My first tip is that we have tenacity. Building a business takes time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears. It's about having a vision and finding different avenues to make that happen and get to the end goal. Secondly, consultation is very important. Consult other business owners in a similar field. They can provide great tips such as things to look out for and things to avoid.

My last tip is to build a dynamic team. Employees are everything. Mentoring, equal business growth and success are key when building a dynamic team. Coaching a team on their strengths and investing in your people is a benefit to both you and them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

JRM&A will be releasing a self-care guide soon that we have made. Once it is released, people can request the guide via social media. It is designed to give people the tools to focus on self-care at their own pace by setting daily goals. By setting a daily goal, people can make the mind-shift towards motivation and self-care, leading them to post-traumatic growth. Additionally, people can get 20% off a Switch Research Workbook when using the code joelle20 on their website https://switchresearch.org/collections/journals-1.
