Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julianna Hynes, Founder of JULIANNA HYNES & ASSOCIATES, LLC, located in Pittsburg, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

JHA is a leadership development, and advancement firm focused on elevating Black female executives, other women leaders, and the allies that support them.

Tell us about yourself

In my first job out of college, I worked in a white-male-dominated organization. Being a driven, young, Black woman and recently divorced single mother in an assistant role was challenging enough. Working with leaders who led by command and control and fear and intimidation proved to be a daily struggle. Although ambitious and intelligent, I found that having a degree and working hard wasn't enough to be seen and promoted. There were obscure barriers and uncommonly known strategies to getting ahead.

These early career experiences fueled my passion for helping leaders lead better and help women be more impactful in their current roles and position themselves for higher-level leadership roles. These experiences also enabled me to support others in navigating the nuances of being Black and female in corporate America.

After attaining more academic knowledge and further life, work, and leadership experiences, I left Corporate America and founded Julianna Hynes & Associates in 2003.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Other than starting my business, it's been honing my skills and refining my focus to work with the populations I'm most passionate about.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, one of the hardest things as a business owner is being a solopreneur and dividing my time between working in the business vs. on the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on your niche, brand, differentiators, and target market.
  2. Build relationships.
  3. Be visible so people can find you.
