Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenni Tarma, Founder of Kaari Prehab, located in Durham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our core mission at Kaari Prehab is to help people feel and move better, whether in their daily life or athletic pursuits. Our clients include sedentary folks wanting to get back into a movement routine, people recovering from injury or surgery, recreational and elite athletes, professional sports teams, Olympians, and everyone in between.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a lifelong athlete. I have been a runner my whole life and am an RRCA Endurance Coach, CrossFit athlete, and CF-L1 trainer. I'm also a student of yoga and an ERYT500 instructor and Yoga Medicine Therapeutic Specialist. My own journey as an athlete has allowed me to experience firsthand the benefits of an intentional and structured mobility and recovery routine, both in terms of feeling good in my body on a day-to-day basis and for allowing me to do the activities, I love even as I get older! I also believe these kinds of resources should be available to everyone and that we all have the capacity to take charge of our well-being. Seeing our clients empower themselves with their own toolkits of self-care techniques motivates me. I'm constantly inspired by our clients, whether someone is working their way out of back pain, getting back to working out after surgery, or hitting a new gym or race PR.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have assembled an incredible community of highly-trained coaches, who each bring deep expertise and sport-specific knowledge to the team- they are truly one of our most valuable assets. I'm so grateful that we've been able to attract such high-caliber talent to our team! We also pride ourselves on our research-driven approach to pain and injury and our ability to meet each client where they're at. Our customized and interactive programming not only evolves with the client's needs but also provides a supportive and adaptable environment- this is crucial whether we're dealing with a tricky injury, chronic pain, or the rapidly changing training and competition schedule of a professional athlete.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing so many hats! Even though I have an amazing, creative, and super hardworking team helping me, it's still a challenge switching between big-picture strategizing and the minutiae of running a business day to day. I'm naturally a pretty organized person, but the sheer volume of tasks can definitely get overwhelming sometimes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's a lot of work, so be sure to pick something you're truly passionate about and don't mind sacrificing weekends and evenings for (at least in the early phases!)
  2. Let it be an iterative process- not everything needs to be perfect from the get-go, and you should constantly be soliciting feedback from your clients and community. They're the ones who will tell you what kind of product and service they actually want.
  3. Ask for advice! You can't know everything, and you'll be surprised at how willing people are to offer guidance, support, and help make connections when asked.
