Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kara Goodwin, Founder of Kara Goodwin Meditation, located in Carmel, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a transformational coach who helps people connect with a higher and truer version of themselves. My clients are people who are looking to deepen their life experience by overcoming limiting beliefs and finding and aligning with their purpose.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Kara Goodwin, and I am a meditation and spiritual transformation coach, host of The Meditation Conversation podcast, energy healer, and beekeeper. I was drawn to meditation after a tragic year that brought many losses in quick succession - the death of my sister-in-law, a tragic accident for my mother-in-law, ICU and a heart transplant for my stepmother, critical brainstem surgery for my stepfather, and the death of my dog - all while I was living out of the country. It felt as though my whole reality shifted, and I dedicated myself to learning the art of meditation. Meditation helped me to move through that difficult time with greater ease and clarity, and as I immersed myself more and more deeply in my practice, I found purpose, freedom, and a deeper connection to life. I now use meditation and other tools to help people understand themselves from a higher perspective and get more out of their lives by experiencing themselves as more than the body, thoughts, and emotions. I also love to connect to people through The Meditation Conversation podcast to highlight the important work others are doing in the realms of personal and spiritual growth, energy work, and consciousness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I host retreats, and those are the most rewarding experiences I have had with people. In a retreat setting, you are immersed in a powerful environment away from everyday life, and you get a large chunk of time to dive into practices, have wisdom talks, connect, laugh, eat great food, and do powerful workshops. Retreats give us the biggest bang for our efforts because the shift to a higher frequency is so palpable. I feel deep fulfillment through guiding people on retreats.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In this particular work, pricing services and marketing them are the absolute hardest things I have to do, hands down! I am very dedicated to giving my clients great experiences which help them increase their overall life satisfaction and connect to something deep and eternal within them, which is arguably the most important work we can do for ourselves! But it can be difficult to quantify and put a price on, and I am always working through that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your inner work on yourself! It may feel irrelevant to your bottom line, but you are going to get the most satisfaction from your work if you know your values and are aligned with them and if your work is helping you to get the most out of your life and purpose.
  2. Find a professional network with people who are offering similar products/services as you. They will have similar hurdles, and some of them will overcome things that are new to you.
  3. Whatever the business, it is about the humans who are using it or interacting with your service. Don't forget to focus on the humans first, not the technology or method or whatever numbers you are tracking towards.
