Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kay Edwards, Founder of Kelsey Bryant Creations, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are really a lifestyle brand that combines design and life coaching because my motto is that designing a space is so similar to designing a life. My customers are mainly women looking to take control of their lives (and spaces) in order to live the way they have always dreamed of living.

Tell us about yourself

I really got into designing spaces when I purchased a fixer-upper back in 2013. I realized that I am very good at creating spaces that are versatile and soothing. The life coach thing came as something that I was always naturally good at. I have a sort of sixth sense in human beings. I am a very feeling person. I cry at movies( like ugly cry). I love teaching women how to take control of their destinies. I love the journey of developing and becoming the true person you were meant to be if you don't have all the noise distracting you from your goals. I am motivated by seeing the metamorphosis, the transformation of the women I have the privilege of speaking with or helping.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is learning how to focus on what I care about. This means outsourcing all the stuff that I am not so good at and focusing on the things I love. It took me a long time to realize that you can't do it all. You leverage what you are good at and outsource everything else.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning when a client is not "your" client. We all want to serve everyone, but I am not here for everyone. I have a niche audience, and no matter the amount of money someone offers me, I can tell within 30 minutes if I want to take someone on as a client or not.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It's very cliche, but first, you have to focus on what you enjoy, something that, if you were independently wealthy, you would still do. Second, you have to play the long game, which means failing at a lot of things that you try, but you must keep going. And finally, you have to hire good people to do the things that you are not good at. If you can't hire people, look at services that allow you to automate tasks; this way, you can continue to focus on what you love.
