What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a herbalist and wellness coach. I also manufacture and sell topical therapeutic products made with grass-fed beef tallow and herbs that I wild foraged at our farm in SE Wisconsin. My customers are people interested in natural and sustainable products to treat common conditions like skin problems, pain, and stress.
Tell us about yourself
First, I started in my kitchen; I was bored at my corporate job and wanted to experiment with herbs to change my routine. Later, I got very sick, and herbs and holistic therapies were the only things that worked. I discovered that I wanted to help and empower others with similar challenges to mine to explore alternatives in safe ways. Finally, three years ago, my partner and I started raising grass-fed cattle on a beautiful, pristine farm. I started doing wild foraging and discovered the healing power of tallow (Rendered beef fat)and the synergy with herbs. This was the aha moment when I realized I could create endless products to help people heal from multiple conditions with my products.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Selling hundreds of products throughout the country and teaching multiple monthly workshops.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It demands a lot of personal and professional clarity about what I want and needs from others, me, and my business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start small but do it well. Run a pilot, try at a farmers market, and run small batches first.
- Enjoy the process without expectations.
- Reassess your needs and desires constantly.
