Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Haines, Founder of Integrative Sexual Wellness, located in Raleigh, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Integrative Sexual Wellness is a company that provides comprehensive and sex-positive sexual healthcare services and coaching. We treat people primarily experiencing sexual dysfunction who want to improve functioning, pleasure, and intimacy with their partner.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a Nurse Practitioner since 2014. I have worked in sexual health for many years, and I love treating sexual dysfunction because it can improve so many different aspects of your life. It can improve not only pleasure and sexual satisfaction but also overall confidence, intimacy, and relationship satisfaction.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my own business has been my biggest accomplishment. Although Nurse Practitioners are legally allowed to open their own practices in most US states, we don't get taught much about creating or running businesses. Fortunately, nurses inherently are fairly skilled at utilizing resources at their disposal as well as critical thinking - which can definitely serve us well in business ownership.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would say one of the hardest things about being a business owner is the risk. Putting time, energy, and resources into offering a service and not knowing if your business will succeed - regardless of how much you believe and stand behind your product.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it. Pull the plug, and rip off the bandaid. It takes a certain level of impulsivity to decide you want to start your own business. There are some people that think about it for years and years and just never fully commit to that decision. In order to be successful, you need to take that first giant step.
  2. Be prepared for change. You might have an idea of what will work for your business, but it doesn't always work out perfectly on the first try. You need to be open to changing strategies.
  3. Ask for help. Invest in a good mentor - preferably someone that comes highly recommended. I would have saved myself a lot of time and money if I really took the time to really evaluate what exactly I needed help with and found someone willing to work with me specifically on those parts of my business.
