Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Jubilee, Co-Founder of Living Proof NYC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Living Proof NYC is a private strength training, pilates, and nutrition studio located in midtown Manhattan. Our customers are individuals of all ages, but mostly busy professionals, moms, and retirees seeking support in developing healthy eating and lifestyle habits to enhance their long-term well-being.

Tell us about yourself

Through my own weight loss experience and witnessing the yo-yo cycle of weight loss and regain while working at a popular weight loss clinic during graduate school at NYU, I chose to create a functional nutrition practice where what, why, and how we eat would all be part of the process of helping my clients achieve sustainable weight loss and health improvements. In 2005 I was lucky enough to meet a personal trainer named Jon Rothschild, who became my business partner in the creation of Living Proof. We both had the inspiration to create a fitness studio that would focus on strength training and nutrition equally, so we decided to team up and create LPNYC. My motivation comes from knowing each and every day; I have the privilege of empowering individuals to take greater control of their mental and physical well-being. I have one of the most rewarding jobs of anyone I know.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishments come when I get feedback from my clients telling me how they received the best blood lab results they have ever had, or they're no longer diabetic, or they now feel confident enough to start dating because they are comfortable in their skin for the first time. I could go on and on...

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Since Living Proof is in a commercial building, but not street level, and with me now offering all of my services remotely since 2020, one of the most challenging aspects is the need for constant marketing and promotion. Even when business is strong, we've learned the hard way that you can't let up on keeping your business at the forefront of potential customers' minds.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about your mission. Running your own business is more than a full-time endeavor, so make sure you LOVE what you're going to need to invest much of your time and attention to.
  2. Have a detailed action plan of how you are going to achieve your goals. Know what your end game is before starting the process.
  3. Be willing to make mistakes. That's how we learn and grow.
