Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Galipeau, founder of Love Plants for Life, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Love Plants for Life. I offer whole-food, plant-based nutrition, and wellness coaching programs for anxious and burnt-out women and AFAB people. Many of my clients are vegetarians and vegans who want to find that balance. They know that eating more plants is important but are struggling with it. My goal is to help them have as much compassion for themselves as they pursue these health goals as they do for other people, animals, and the world around them.

Tell us about yourself

In a nutshell, I'd always been interested in nutrition, but seeing the changes that going 100% plant-based had on my own health spurred me to study nutrition in the first place. During my studies, I saw further changes that led me to focus on hormones and their effects on just about everything, including mood and cognition. From there, I center my business on that. Helping others discover this and see those changes in themselves is a key motivator for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I took the leap and left my “day job” in retail to focus on this business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My business moved fully online in 2020, which meant working from home in my little studio. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had to work on setting and enforcing boundaries around time at the desk, but remembering that time away from it is as, if not more, important!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research the field in which you want to build your business.
  2. Know who you want to serve and why, if not how yet.
  3. Stick to and communicate your boundaries around your time.

Bonus tips: ask for guidance and take advantage of tools that are designed to facilitate your workflow. And always keep learning!
