Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joy Bolden, CEO of My Modern Parenting, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a Black mother and as a professional, I struggled to find professional resources created by Black child development experts. So, in an attempt to create diversity and increase access to Black-owned child development resources, I created My Modern Parenting.

The mission of My Modern Parenting is to provide parents and early childhood professionals, from all backgrounds, with the support and tools to navigate the first five years and cultivate children who are confident, emotionally intelligent, culturally aware, and academically successful. Raising up a generation with these qualities will lead to less depression, racism, and hate - things that are running rapid in our current society.

My Modern Parenting provides culturally responsive resources to parents, including 1-on-1 coaching, consulting, an online motherhood community, free ebooks, and blog articles. We provide professional development to early childhood teachers and administrators serving children, as well as quality assurance services, including CLASS observations and CDA verification visits. We ensure that every resource is inclusive of the Black and Brown experience, and we acknowledge how cultural backgrounds play a major role in parenting decisions and teaching methods.

Tell us about yourself

For the past 14 years, I have been committed to empowering children, their families, and their teachers. My dedication has led me to serve as a professor, researcher, speaker, trainer, program manager, advocate, and coach. In 2021, I launched My Modern Parenting to provide quality, culturally aware parenting resources to all parents.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of every My Modern Parenting resource, but I am most proud of our Modern Mama Squad. Modern Mama Squad is our most in-demand parenting resource. The squad consists of mamas who have children between the ages of 0-5 years. As a member of the squad, the mamas have access to an exclusive membership community, monthly events with parenting experts, parenting courses, monthly 1-on-1 sessions with me, and more.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a #mompreneur is a challenge. Launching My Modern Parenting has not been a smooth process. I built my company by myself. As a result, there were many nights when I would go to sleep feeling frustrated because I was not where I had planned to be according to my timeline.

As a mom, professor, and entrepreneur, my days are full. On the day that I had initially planned to launch the Modern Mama Squad, my daughter was homesick. I had to step away from the business, falling behind on my timeline, and tend to her needs. It wasn't the plan, but I didn't have a choice. As a working mom, I understand the need for a community of like-minded moms who can offer advice and empathize with my struggles. This is one of the reasons why I created the Modern Mama Squad.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be consistent - talent and skill are void without work and commitment.
  2. Get support - a business mentor or support group that specializes in your niche is critical.
  3. Do your research - you can have a great idea but can flop if you target the wrong audience.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship is hard, but it's so worth it. Being able to support parents and professionals and cultivate our next generation is my calling, and it brings joy.
