Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sheryl A. Isaacs LMFT, Licensed Marriage, and Family Therapist, located in Ben Lomond, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist that loves working with families and children. My passion is truly working with the family as a whole and being a true family therapist. I have a strong desire to bring growth, support, and change the families and children that I provide therapy. I believe that it is important for families to have access to community resources and support to strengthen their familial support base. Just as each person is a unique individual, so is each child and every family. There is no such thing as "cookie cutter therapy." When working with a family, I utilize a variety of techniques and theories to create a unique, personal, productive therapy relationship.

I am a strong advocate for early intervention and have seen huge growth for children that are fortunate enough to receive it. I love working with children under five and am amazed at child development and early intervention. I enjoy looking at how a child is being affected developmentally by family challenges, such as divorce and co-parenting. I just recently opened an online store where inspirational gifts, sensory items, and fun/self-care items can be bought. I believe that it is possible to raise our baseline of self-care by creating self-care spaces in our homes and surrounding ourselves with those things that make us smile. I see the store as another way to provide support to clients.

Tell us about yourself

I chose to go into private practice for the flexibility that it would offer me as a person and my clients. In having my own practice, I am able to create a safe, self-care space for my clients. What motivates me the most is seeing my Clients grow as a person and move beyond the trauma they have faced. It is such an honor and privilege to be able to walk with someone through their pain. Seeing Clients become grounded, centered, and authentic is quite rewarding!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been running a viable private practice for six years. I have been fortunate to have a steady stream of clients that have kept my practice full. Many others will tell you must conform to specific business models to be successful. The truth is that the most important thing you can do is be authentic in your business and fully embrace who you are. It is when we are authentic that we are able to truly connect with others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance is one of the hardest things that I have faced as a business owner. There is always some type of work that could be done. If we do not take time for ourselves care, we cannot be the best version of ourselves. It is something that I continually have to monitor within myself, as self-care needs can change depending on our life circumstances.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top tip would be to be "authentically you" in whatever business you engage in. It is that authenticity that builds a connection with customers. I also firmly believe that you must trust your own instincts and intuition. There are so many voices out there that will try to direct you, but ultimately you know what is best for your business. Remember that starting a business is a big endeavor and will take time. Be patient with yourself and be kind as you encounter your growing edges and learning curves. Mistakes are just chances for growth!
