Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelley Grant, Owner of The Pines Yoga & Wellness House, located in Comox, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Pines Yoga & Wellness House is a yoga studio and hub for health, wellness, and community. We cater to yogis and health enthusiasts in the Comox Valley.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a yoga enthusiast and health coach for many years. When the opportunity presented to create a studio came - I jumped at it! We, on average, have had ten amazing teachers, including myself, operating from our space, and the community was quickly built. The Pines quickly became known as a "home for yoga and wellness." I've seen firsthand the transformations in our students, seen their smiles, and felt their gratitude with every class. It is truly the community and the group of incredibly gifted teachers that keep me motivated and inspired every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On our first anniversary of being open, we hosted a "Yogi Appreciation Day." Our teachers pitched in, and we offered a day of workshops - everything from sound bowl healing to nature walk meditations to "how to do arm balances and inversions." We had 78 of our regulars join, and they all sang their praises for this amazing offering of The Pines. We also grew from 40 to over 600 students in one year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning the balance of being a "friend" versus being a business owner and running it as a business. My services are very heartfelt, and sometimes it is difficult to enforce the business aspect of our offering.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have a good support network, jump in with both feet, treat people well, and put your heart into it!
