Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greer Van Dyck, founder of Windrose Coaching & Speaking, located in Steamboat Springs, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with organizations to support healthy cultures. Companies hire me to come in to provide training, coaching, and mentorship to middle managers and leadership teams! Creating environments that are psychologically safe is the foundation of my work, and I have had the gift of supporting leaders in establishing and maintaining authentic leadership, which has allowed for exponential growth.

Tell us about yourself

My entire life, I've been motivated and energized by service. My formal training as a nurse brought me to my love of mental health, and I am most fulfilled when I am part of conversations that aim to develop others both personally and professionally. I care deeply about facilitating conversations that allow individuals the ability to reflect and the safety to be vulnerable about where they can grow. COVID has really shown us the importance of bringing our humanness into the workplace, and I love supporting leaders in discovering their own style of leadership.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, starting my business in the first place felt like my biggest achievement. I put it off for a decade because I was so gripped by the fear of failure. Because of that, putting myself out there initially felt incredibly scary and now very rewarding. My biggest accomplishment to date has been my capacity to continue growing my business amidst a global pandemic and to work with clients that truly inspire me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing imposter syndrome. I feel like all humans battle the internal narrative that tries to limit our potential, and the vulnerability of starting my own business has taught me the importance of consistently working at not believing those limiting thoughts. I work daily to believe in my capabilities as a business owner and facilitator. With time, those thoughts have really diminished, but I'd be lying if I said they had gone away entirely! :)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get really clear on what you want and WHY.
  2. Lean on your network and find mentorship. It takes a village!
  3. Create space for quarterly reflection/review so you can assess your values and how your work is aligning with those values, and be open to how you can adjust to stay true to your WHY.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Everyone, regardless of title, is a leader. Each one of us has the power to influence others, and it is up to us to decide how we want others to experience us.
