Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with florist, Charlotte Mackie founder at The Floral Workshop, located in sunny East Sussex.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to where you are today...

I fell into floristry by accident, really. I left school not knowing what I wanted to do so applied for a job at a florist in Tunbridge Wells. I, however, always looked forward to driving past the most beautiful florist in the Pantiles and it became my dream to work there. After three applications I think they got bored of me and finally gave in! I loved every minute of my time here but sadly it shut it’s doors in 2013. This ultimately pushed me into something I would never of been brave enough to do... start my own business. Eight years later It’s the best thing that’s happened to me, giving me freedom and the luxury of flexible time with my children.

What motivates you each day?

Floristry is ever-changing. Every wedding I do is different, there’s always a new season to look forward to, but most of all it’s seeing the joy my creations bring to people.

What makes your flower business stand out?

I am workshop based which means I don’t have the overheads of a high-street shop which means you get extra value for money. I am so environmentally conscious and will always attempt to use biodegradable products where possible.

To what would you attribute your entrepreneurial success?

I have no doubt that the style and business experience I gained when I was employed gave me all the foundations and knowledge to be a successful business owner. It’s not all pretty flowers, so much work goes into every event before the day even goes ahead. I know I’m also very efficient on the communication side of work. Customers like a swift response to any inquiries, which is my forte. I think this goes a very long way with people.

What is the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner?

I find it very hard to switch off! Even when I’ve cleared my diary for a weekend off I worry I’ve missed something. There’s always something floating around in my mind! Working on my own I have to be on the ball with every step of every order. Multi tasking to a whole new level.
