Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Ball, Director of Work Horizons, located in Birmingham, West Midlands, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Work Horizons is a consultancy in people issues, a coaching practice, and has an online membership tool for people in career transition. The online site is also used for organisations for Outplacement support. Our clients are individuals looking to make a change, whether that is their decision or the organisation, and leaders in need of help, for example, renewing the culture and organisation, developing their people, or embedding teamwork.

Tell us about yourself

The final corporate role was HR Director of one of GKN's businesses. I left when my wife became terminally ill, and I became an independent consultant. I can identify with anyone feeling a sense of loss and needing to make a life change. After a career in an intense working environment, my experience is focused on achieving successful outcomes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Becoming a partner of Wiley International to deliver 'Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team' based on the work of Patrick Lencioni. However, there is immense satisfaction in every coaching conversation, which helps the individual move forward.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Administration, but it allows the pursuit of all of the stimulating aspects.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Only do things about which you are passionate.
  2. Keep learning, and this is a great opportunity for you to do that.
  3. To quote Bill Walsh, 'The score takes care of itself' - do the correct things well, and results will follow.
