Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Bauman, Founder of Your Development Resource, located in Columbus, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Your Development Resource. I teach women entrepreneurs strategies to overcome overwhelm, be more confident in their businesses, and accomplish their goals faster and more consistently. Most of my clients have either recently started their own business or have been in business for a while but aren't finding the success they would like to have yet. I work with my clients on both their mindset and their skill sets. You have to have both to be successful.

Tell us about yourself

I created Your Development Resource because I'm a teacher at heart. (My undergraduate degree is in Education.) I've always said I want a career where I can be a resource to others, so after obtaining my Master's in Business Psychology, I founded Your Development Resource, and I AM a resource to others in the areas of personal and professional development. Every day, I'm motivated to connect with more women in business because I know my services help them. I LOVE that my clients message me with their big and small wins all the time! I'm happy to be a part of their entrepreneurial journeys!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I'm always learning AND implementing what I learn to grow my business and meet the needs of my clients. I have built both in-person and online communities and coaching programs. In order to do that, I had to be open to learning WAY more about technology than I previously knew...and then I implemented that knowledge. This is an example of why working on both mindset AND skill sets is critical for success. I see other women in business want to learn and take all kinds of courses, but they don't have the mindset to implement what they've learned. In fact, that's one of the limiting beliefs I work on with my clients...this limiting belief that they don't know enough yet or aren't "ready." So yes, I think it's a big accomplishment that I apply what I learn. Ready or not! That's how you figure out what you still need to work on.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is that you are completely responsible for everything. You can delegate, and you can outsource, but as the owner, you are accountable for the results.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do some market research to make sure your business idea is something people want and not just something YOU think is a good idea or think that people need.
  2. Do some planning and then launch. If you wait to launch until you feel completely ready, then you've waited too long. Jump in and be nimble so you can make the necessary adjustments as you go.
  3. Hire a coach and be coachable. You will save yourself SO much time and money in the long run by working with a coach than if you try to figure everything out yourself. Remember that time is actually your most precious resource because it is not renewable!
