Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Wendorf, Founder, and CEO of EQUUS, located in Santa Fe, NM, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EQUUS is a leadership and personal development organization. We create conditions for transformative learning through coaching and uncommon experiential processes. Our work is informed by 3.8 billion years of evolutionary intelligence––nature––to inspire, educate, and support innovative sustainable solutions to the challenges we all face today. As a coaching and leadership development organization, we have found that in order to ensure that our clients emerge with real, meaningful, and sustained change, they must be exposed to experiential and kinesthetic processes. This supports cognitive learning to be integrated into the whole body, where the real change happens.

Tell us about yourself

I believe that when people are armed with evidence-based knowledge about how to engage in the ways disruption can ignite and leverage transformative change, they thrive and create lives of deep meaning and purpose. I have been walking alongside people amidst a change in their lives for over 30 years and support them to orient their journey from an authentic calling to that which is most resonant for them. I have been a student of the natural world my entire life and have come to see that many answers we seek about how to thrive and flourish are made available to us through that partnership.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking a one-woman idea to a 30-person thriving human-centered business in under five years that has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and more.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The isolation and fear that arises when the whole dream, its success or failure, rests on your shoulders and your shoulders alone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Relationship is key - cultivate each relationship carefully, one at a time - both inside the organization and with clients, vendors, and your community.
  2. Faster and harder and bigger is not necessarily better.
  3. Your unique difference is what draws people in.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Business is a means by which creativity and social innovation can move forward in the world. Businesses have the capacity to wield an enormous positive impact on the environment and society. How we build and run our businesses can make a real difference in the world.
