What's your business, and who are your customers?
Koukatelier (meaning Kouka's studio in French) is a space of creativity, freedom & expression of self. In my studio (and business), I create positive art that centers around the experience of black women in their struggles, identity and hopes.
Tell us about yourself
Growing up in Haiti, I was exposed to various art forms, from paintings in my home to artisanal crafts in the streets of Port-au-Prince. What started as curiosity as a child turned into a deep passion for crafting and a long-standing dream to create art. I always knew I'd be an artist, and I'd pursue that as a business or career. My path may have been unconventional, but I will continue to work on Koukatelier diligently because it's truly my passion. Connecting with others, creating a body of work that has meaning, and then sharing that with my collectors is an unmatched feeling.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was not giving up. Through the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur, artist, business owner, and so many hats I wear in my personal life. My biggest accomplishment is pursuing this without fail.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Tuning out the noise. A lot of people will tell you - this isn't a real job; they will tell you they are worried or that you'll fail. The hardest thing is having faith that you can accomplish it all and succeed. Believing in yourself will keep you disciplined and focused when everyone else bails on you.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

- Follow your passion - and do the thing - no matter what.
